Information About The Walker, One the Best Free Museums in Minneapolis


Billed as more than a museum, we hope we can cover all that the Walker Art Center in the far too few words we have available to us today, because this wonderful establishment IS more than a museum. Offering budding artists the opportunity to enhance their skills while showing the art of the most prolific artists, not just from here, but from all over the world, the center is destined to take up a lot of your vacation minutes.

  • Open: Wednesdays through Sunday; Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Hours Of Operation:
    • Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Thursday: 1o a.m.
    • Friday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.*
      • *Sensory Friendly Sundays: Every second Sunday each month from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Following this program, the galleries will resume public entry.
  • Minneapolis Sculpture Garden: Open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Experiences at The Walker


Isn’t it ironic that we finally get around to mentioning the EXHIBITS of this unusual Art Center at the very end of the page? That is because, the art gallery, offering all manners of art covering all genres, is an important part of the museum, but isn’t the only part of this unique establishment, billed as “More than a Museum” a slogan that we wholeheartedly agree with!

Summer at the Walker


Offering the chance to play mini-golf, to explore the art of Keith Haring, a talented man know for sharing the belief that art is for everybody, and a variety of free events that include panels discussing a multitude of topics, Summer at the Walker is different every year. The Sculpture Garden is in bloom during these summer months, so take some time to enjoy the beautiful weather as you explore the sculptures and the flowers that make this outside area serene and tranquil.

The Idea House


The Idea House is where ideas bloom, offering how to books, artistic furniture, design elements and so much more for guests to purchase and perhaps learn from. Separate from their gift shop, which we definitely recommend stopping in on your way out, the Idea House may be your favorite part of your art center adventures.

The Walker Cinema


The Cinema is where artistic magic is made, showing documentaries about art, television, and so much more.

The Walker Stage


Original performances in dance, music, theater, and others make their mark on the Walker Stage.

Skyline Mini Golf


We briefly mentioned the miniature golf in the Summer at the Walker Paragraph, but it deserves a second mention, especially as Skyline Mini Golf takes place on the rooftop of the Walker, offering panoramic views and “obstacles” designed by artists for an innovative twist to one of our favorite games.

Cardamom


Although the museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, the Walker restaurant, Cardamom, is open every day of the week from 11 AM until 9 PM, serving a yummy selection of Mediterranean favorites, including hummus, lamb burgers, and a fusion of Germany and the Mediterranean, their fried eggplant schnitzel!
