As the crisp autumn air gives way to the frosty chill of winter, Minnesota transforms into a haven for hockey enthusiasts. Known as the “State of Hockey,” Minnesota has a deeply ingrained hockey culture that captivates locals and visitors alike. The 2026–27 season brings another full slate of professional, college, youth, and outdoor hockey across the state. Hockey isn’t just a sport in Minnesota; it’s a way of life. From local rinks to professional arenas, Minnesotans embrace the game with passion. The state has produced more NHL players than any other, and its high school hockey tournaments are legendary, often drawing crowds that rival professional games. Minnesota is also home to the iconic Minnesota Wild, whose games at the Grand Casino Arena, in St. Paul are must-see events for fans of all ages.

The Minnesota Wild is the heart and soul of professional hockey in the state. The 2026–27 regular-season schedule features 84 games, including 42 home contests at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul. The Wild opens its home schedule against the Boston Bruins, and the arena’s lively atmosphere makes every game an electric experience. If you’re staying in the Twin Cities area, catching a Wild game is a top recommendation—check the official schedule for dates, start times, and ticket availability. Don’t forget to grab some Wild merchandise to bring a piece of Minnesota’s hockey spirit home with you.

Minnesota boasts some of the best college hockey programs in the nation. Schools like the University of Minnesota (Golden Gophers), University of Minnesota Duluth (Bulldogs), and Minnesota State University (Mavericks) have storied traditions and fierce rivalries. College games are often just as thrilling as professional ones, with passionate fans and emerging stars showcasing their skills.

Minnesota winters are synonymous with outdoor hockey. Frozen lakes and community rinks across the state come alive with pickup games and skating enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a beginner, strapping on a pair of skates and playing under the open sky is a quintessential Minnesota experience. Many parks and neighborhoods maintain outdoor rinks, so be sure to check out one near your MINNeSTAY rental.

The hockey season in Minnesota isn’t just about the games. Winter festivals, pond hockey tournaments, and community celebrations bring the sport outdoors throughout the 2026–27 season. The Saint Paul Winter Carnival and the annual U.S. Pond Hockey Championships on Lake Nokomis are great ways to experience hockey in its purest form.
